Local agencies have geared up in preparation for the major winter storm hitting the region, but by late Monday afternoon they had not reported any serious accidents in the Prescott area.

Higher-elevation areas of the state were seeing numerous road closures Monday afternoon, however. Closures included Interstate 17 north of the Yavapai County line. Portions of Highway 260 and Highway 87 east of I-17 also had closed by late afternoon Monday.

Supreme Court denies Williamson Valley Road widening appeal

The Arizona Supreme Court refused to hear a legal challenge to the proposed widening of the northern part of Williamson Valley Road, laying to rest the legal challenge brought against the project by a community group.

The high court action allows a June ruling by the Court of Appeals to stand. In July 2007, the Williamson Valley Community Organization sued Yavapai County in Superior Court, contending the county Board of Supervisors violated the county's General Plan and its road ordinance by hiring a company to draw design plans to widen Williamson Valley Road from two lanes to four or five lanes, including a median. That section of the plans would extend from Pioneer Parkway to Outer Loop Road.

Yavapai Deputy Attorney Jack Fields noted that the General Plan is merely a guide and that the county could not be sued for noncompliance.

New Thrift Store Will Benefit Homeless Pets

When the parallel struck me, it was like a bolt of lightning. Here at the shelter we take in "unwanteds" from people throughout the community and find them new homes, and now we have another venture that takes in "unwanteds," but this time it's not animals - it's clothes and furniture and other household items. A thrift store is a perfect venture for a humane society. So last week, the Yavapai Humane Society opened the doors to our new Thrift Shop in Willow Creek Plaza near the old Kmart where the 99-Cent Store used to be.

Glassford Hill Road braces for makeover

PRESCOTT VALLEY - The tri-city area's sole local road project to benefit from federal stimulus money should be ready for construction by early November.

Local officials heard Wednesday evening during a Central Yavapai Metropolitan Planning Organization meeting that a pavement overlay project on a two-mile stretch of Glassford Hill Road was currently out to bid, and would close on Sept. 25.

After that, Prescott Valley Public Works Director Norm Davis said, the $1.5 million project, which involves applying three inches of new pavement on the road, should get under way by about Nov. 1, and would take about a week to complete.

This show is open exclusively to amateur exhibitors age 50 and over.

Parkinson and his horse won the title and a prize package that included a Montana Silversmiths sterling silver buckle with 14-karat gold overlay, a neck wreath, custom designed gold-tone trophy, Cripple Creek Jacket with World Champion patch, Tex Tan product as well as a cash prize.

AZ water association honors 3 OMI supervisors

PRESCOTT VALLEY - Guy Crawford, Shane Shatzer and Stefan Padilla hold jobs at CH2M Hill OMI that are as interconnected as the pipelines that deliver water to Prescott Valley residents.

Padilla, water operations and maintenance supervisor, said he and Crawford, the wastewater supervisor, work with the wastewater plant staff. OMI contracts with the Town of Prescott Valley to provide water and sewer service, and recharge the aquifer with effluent (treated sewage).

"I'm putting water in the pipe. He's fixing the pipe," Padilla said.

More than a decade ago, Hopi artist Ramson Lomatewama broke the mold in the Native American arts community when he delved into glass-blowing. And yet despite pursuing a non-traditional medium, he did not abandon his cultural roots.

Today, Lomatewama creates conventional glass pieces such as bowls, vases and hummingbird feeders, but he incorporates the traditional Hopi cultural themes of nature and the spirit world into them - as well as Indian figurines - using myriad pieces of colored glass.

$4,000 grant covers cost of seasonal closings

Chino Valley senior citizens will get to eat 20 extra meals at the Senior Citizen Center between now and June 30, 2010, thanks to a federal grant.

Jason Kelly, Parks, Recreation & Senior Services director, said this is possible because the department received a $4,000 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency through Yavapai County's Emergency Management Division.

He said this money is part of the $56,591 the county received from FEMA under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county.

Council OKs water rights swap for recharge site

The Chino Valley Town Council Thursday on a 6-0 vote approved an agreement with TerraMax to purchase property for a recharge site in the Big Chino Sub Basin in exchange for the town's Historically Irrigated Acres water rights on the site. Councilman Joel Baker was absent.

Jeffrey A. Dana, owner of TerraMax Development Group, said after the meeting that he entered the agreement with the town because "as a developer, I always need water. Water will be the driving force in the valley. Also, I'm always interested in benefiting the community."

Toll Bros. Arizona home building revenue fell 50%

Toll Brothers Inc. said Wednesday more springtime homebuyers have come into its luxury home communities and left deposits on new orders - a sign that the battered housing market is improving.

Low interest rates and falling home prices are acting as a counter balance to the weak economy and rising unemployment. Since late March, Toll has seen an increase in deposits during seven of the past nine weeks, compared to weekly figures from fiscal 2008.

HUD says Arizona bridge-loan program hasn't been killed

A U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development official said Tuesday that HUD would move forward with a plan to let first-time homebuyers use the currently available tax credit of up to $8,000 as collateral for "bridge loans" to cover the down payment on Federal Housing Administration-insured mortgages.

HUD spokesman Brian Sullivan said Phoenix-area lenders misinterpreted the department's withdrawal of an official communication, known as a "Mortgagee Letter," announcing the program last week.

Breaking News: New swine flu hits Arizona

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed Arizona's first case of the new swine flu, said Robert Resendes, director of Yavapai County Community Health Services.

Resendes said he doesn't know yet which county the case is from.

The CDC is investigating three more Arizona cases and those results are should hit within the next 24 hours.

State sends four suspicious flu cases from Arizona to CDC for testing

As the number of confirmed cases of the new swine flu virus continues to rise in the United States, the biggest problem health officials are facing currently in the ongoing outbreak is getting timely testing results, state and local health officials said Tuesday.

The Arizona Department of Health Services has sent four suspicious Arizona flu samples to the Centers for Disease Control lab for additional testing. The samples are of an undetermined subtype, said ADHS spokeswoman Laura Oxley Tuesday. CDC testing will determine whether the strain is the new variation of the swine flu virus.

Bashas' chain closing Prescott store

PRESCOTT - Chris Albers left the Bashas' market in the Frontier Village Center Monday afternoon to load some groceries into her car.

That's when the Cordes Junction resident found out that the store is on the Chandler-based supermarket chain's list of looming closures.

"It's like the home-town (grocery) store and now it's going away," she said. "My gosh, I've raised my kids on Bashas' food."

WASHINGTON – Sales of previously occupied homes jumped unexpectedly in February by the largest amount in nearly six years as first-time buyers took advantage of deep discounts on foreclosures and other distressed properties.

Stocks jump on bank plan, rise in home sales

NEW YORK – Wall Street is getting the good news it wants on the economy's biggest problems: banks and housing.

Investors reignited a two-week rally Monday after hearing the government's plan to help banks remove as much as $1 trillion in bad assets from their books and home sales showed a surprise increase. Major stock indexes jumped as much as 4 percent, including the Dow Jones industrial average, which rose nearly 300 points.

The Treasury Department said its plan would rely on the government's $700 billion financial rescue fund, the Federal Reserve and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., as well as private investors.
